When you get a home away from home, even the most difficult challenges become easy. Former Wimbledon champion and WTA star Elena Rybakina witnessed a similar situation on Thursday while competing for her nation at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China. Despite the odds stacked against Kazakhstan in the battle versus Team USA, Rybakina pulled off a sensational victory to keep hopes alive ahead of an upcoming decider in the ongoing quarterfinal battle. It seems an off-court factor played a key role in her much-needed triumph over a formidable opponent in Jessica Pegula.

During the QF stage of the BJK Cup, the American team earned a significant edge initially, thanks to Emma Navarro’s victory in her singles match against Kazakh player Yulia Putintseva. Obviously, Rybakina was under pressure to deliver. One more defeat and it would have been game over for her nation. But she clawed back and cruised through her singles encounter against World No.7 Pegula. In straight sets (6-4, 6-1), she bested Pegula to level the overall score to 1-1 between the USA and Kazakhstan. And her post-match reaction said it all. “It was really important match, and Yulia was fighting till the end. A bit unlucky in the end, but I’m happy to bring the win. And thank you so much for coming and supporting us. I really love playing China and I’m happy to be back”

When the on-court interviewer asked whether the support felt like home, Elena Rybakina simply confessed, “Yeah, I love it a lot. Thank you guys for supporting us,” while urging them to keep cheering “in the next very important doubles.” It all comes down to a decider now.

In the upcoming doubles battle, Rybakina and Putintseva will go against No.1 doubles player Taylor Townsend alongside Pegula. The equation is simple, to say the least. The winning pair will lead their country into the semis of the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals.

Update: USA beats Kazakhstan to advance into the semis.

Elena Rybakina’s efforts go in vain after Team USA’s epic comeback

Just moments after Elena Rybakina managed to keep her nation afloat in the race to the semis, she witnessed a setback. To be honest, it was kind of expected in doubles, with the 2022 Wimbledon queen and Putintseva going against a stronger pair like Taylor Townsend and Pegula.

Yes, Rybakina outperformed Pegula in singles, but the latter made a sensational return while teaming up with No.1 doubles star and compatriot Townsend. In the ‘winner-takes-all’ battle, they beat the pair of Elena Rybakina-Putintseva in straight sets. Outcome? With a final lead of 2-1, America is now into the semis of 2025 Billie Jean King Cup.
