The Las Vegas Aces vs the Indiana Fever semifinal matchup poses some interesting questions in regards to overreliance versus trust. Becky Hammon’s Aces, as dominant as they are, rely on A’ja Wilson’s ability to score at will, and it showed against the Seattle Storm.
Wilson’s 38-point masterclass is the only reason Las Vegas made it to the semifinals, and they’ll be expecting even more success from the reigning MVP. On the other hand, Indiana has trusted the process even through difficult times. Stephanie White’s pace-and-space offensive system has worked like a charm and secured the Fever an unexpected semifinal berth. Both teams are diametrically opposed–polar opposites, if you will–and it’s going to be an exciting semifinal match for sure!

Las Vegas Aces vs Indiana Fever: An upset in the making?
The question that we need to ask ahead of this semifinal matchup is this: Will the Aces’ overreliance on A’ja Wilson lead to their downfall? When we talk about defensive planning, player profiles, tendencies, and hot spots are scrutinized with great detail in the playoffs. So, the fact that A’ja Wilson is Las Vegas’ undisputed showrunner might work in Indiana’s advantage. After all, it’s much easier to plan for one player than it is for five.
According to ESPN’s matchup predictor, the Las Vegas Aces have a 63.8% chance of winning this Game 1 matchup against Indiana. They have the advantage of playing at home, and to be honest? The Fever’s frontcourt production is no match for what Wilson and Smith bring to the table. However, that doesn’t mean that the Aces are infallible. Far from it, actually. Rachel DeMita said it best. “Their biggest strength is also their biggest weakness in that [A’ja Wilson is] the most dominant scorer. And they don’t have a team where everyone can score, where everyone is getting involved.” The analyst explained.
Indiana’s five-out offense, impeccable three-point shooting, and high-energy defense might spell trouble for the Las Vegas Aces. They have a much higher tempo and will try to get their opponents tired before half-time. Not to mention, Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston, and Natasha Howard bring some much-needed experience and offensive quality to the Fever lineup.

There’s no denying that A’ja Wilson will dominate as usual. The 3x MVP has never let her team down when the going gets tough. However, considering a lack of options for the Aces, it might be easier to stop their offensive rhythm as compared to a more dynamic team like Seattle. If you ask us, you can’t count Indiana out of this matchup.
Stephanie White and her team have gotten through many tougher assignments with a lot less stability this season. Considering that they’ve dealt with five major season-ending injuries this season, a tough frontcourt matchup isn’t sure to rattle the tight-knit group. One thing’s for certain: Indiana isn’t going down without a fight. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting matchup!
