What is Shey Peddy’s hardship contract with the Los Angeles Sparks?

A hardship contract in the WNBA is a temporary player deal that allows teams to exceed the 12-player roster limit when they have fewer than 10 healthy players due to injuries or other absences. These contracts are short-term, often lasting 7 days or until the injured players return. Peddy is on a rest-of-the-season hardship contract, so she could have been with the squad till the end of the season if she hadn’t been released.

They help teams stay competitive during injury crises without making permanent roster changes. The Sparks were left short-handed ahead of Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Lynx, with guard Julie Allemand away playing in the EuroBasket for Belgium, Rae Burrell ruled out with a knee injury, and Odyssey Sims sidelined for personal reasons. In the Fever’s case, they are still without Caitlin Clark, who is recovering from her groin injury. They lost Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson to season-ending injuries. Most recently, Sophie Cunningham was ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in that Connecticut Sun game.

Peddy averaged 15.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.1 steals at Temple.

Despite being drafted 23rd overall by the Chicago Sky, she did not debut in the WNBA until years later. Peddy took an unconventional route to the WNBA, spending several years playing overseas. She honed her skills in countries like Israel, Austria, and Germany. Her international experience enriched her game, preparing her for a late but impactful WNBA entry.

Peddy made her WNBA debut in 2019 with the Washington Mystics at the age of 30 and later joined the Phoenix Mercury. She enjoyed a career-best season in 2022, averaging 9.9 points, 3.4 assists, and 1.6 steals before an Achilles injury cut her season short. In 2023, she battled back to return from injury, only to face a concussion later that year, which again sidelined her for much of the season. The guard received a blow to her head with an elbow from Seattle Storm’s Jordan Horston. She was rushed to the hospital but suffered no major injuries. Despite that, she suffered a concussion and played only 18 games, while averaging 5.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.8 steals.
