Over the last few months, NBA star Bam Adebayo has proved himself to be quite the supportive boyfriend to A’ja Wilson. From supporting the WNBA star courtside during the Women’s Basketball Gold Medal match between Team France and Team USA at the Paris Olympics to wearing her signature Nike shoes during a game, he has continued showing up from time to time. Therefore, it wasn’t a surprise when he didn’t choose to stay silent over the recent honor, or rather, co-honor, that A’ja Wilson got bestowed upon her.
The Las Vegas Aces star recently won her third WNBA Defensive Player of the Year title. However, this time, she had to share the award with someone else! A’ja Wilson and Minnesota Lynx forward Alanna Smith each received 29 votes from the 72 media members. In light of this, the duo were named co-winners, making it the first time the award, first given out in the WNBA’s inaugural season in 1997, went to more than one player.
After the decision was announced, Bam Adebayo took to his official Threads account and wrote, “Can somebody explain Co to me right now..?!?” He also added a picture of Wilson at a press conference, during which she was sitting behind the table, with a stern expression on her face, and pointing at a sheet of paper placed on her desk.

A’ja Wilson and Bam Adebayo had been friends for a long time. Though rumors of their dating began circulating back in early 2024, it wasn’t seemingly confirmed until A’ja paid tribute to Adebayo during her jersey retirement ceremony by saying, “What a blessing to have those most special to me courtside today, especially my favorite Olympian from out of town.”
In April, Wilson went into more detail about the relationship, stating, “I have an amazing boyfriend who really is my safe space. He’s truly a gift. He’s obviously in the same field, so we bounce off different things with one another to where it’s like, no, we’re not alone. He’s helped me through a lot and welcomed me to be who I’m going to be. I know he’s like, ‘I don’t know what A’ja I’m going to get today, but I’m blessed to be beside her.’” Adebayo continues proving that, with the Threads post being the most recent example.
If Bam Adebayo was caught off guard seeing two players share the same award, he wouldn’t be the first. It’s not something we see often, especially in the W, but history shows it has happened before, even in the NBA. The Rookie of the Year award, for instance, was shared by Geoff Petrie and Dave Cowens back in the 1970-71 season. Years later, Jason Kidd and Grant Hill were also named Co-Rookies of the Year in 1994-95. So while rare, sharing honors is part of basketball’s story.

Bam Adebayo Trolled A’ja Wilson For Copying His Wardrobe Choices
Back in September, A’ja Wilson captured the attention of netizens over her tunnel fit. Reporters captured pictures of the Aces star as she arrived at the matchup against the Chicago Sky wearing an oversized red Balaenciaga shirt. The outfit was paired with red boots and black sunglasses. As it so happens, the same shirt was worn by Adebayo when he made a courtside appearance, alongside Wilson, at an Aces game. Therefore, it wasn’t a surprise when Wilson’s post highlighting her outfit caught the attention of the 3x NBA All-Star.
What’s your perspective on:
Is the concept of 'co-winners' in sports awards fair, or does it undermine individual excellence?
Have an interesting take?
“Copying my whole wardrobe shirt for shirt smh 🤦🏾♂️,” Adebayo wrote.

This was one of the few other instances when Adebayo questioned the steps his girlfriend was taking vis-à-vis fashion. Back in June, A’ja Wilson donned a striking Zebra print suit, accompanied by white heels. The outfit exuded class and grace to some. To Adebayo, it exuded an opportunity to troll. Soon, the player took to Threads and posted a hilarious Zebra GIF along with the caption, “Big Steppa.”
Bam Adebayo will troll you when he finds the chance. At the same time, however, he will defend you when you only co-receive an honor.
