When week 1 ended, Jordan Chiles was on the brink of being eliminated. In a week, how the tides have turned. An outstanding performance in week 2, and now, she’s safe. The performance was so good that even the judges couldn’t help but hand out great compliments. “Going for gold tonight. Your focus, your determination, you really listened to what we said.” It was ‘clean, clear, sharp,’ and it showed her ‘personality,’ said Bruno. But then a big comment came from Carrie Ann. “Yes, yes, yes! You remind me of one of my favorite performers of all time, Tina Turner,” she said. Jordan Chiles was compared to one of the biggest names in rock and roll.
Jordan was asked about the compliment given by Carrie Ann in an interview with ExtraTV. Replying to that, she said, “I honestly.. that’s the most iconic thing I’ve ever heard in my life. I love Tina Turner. I just love her presence and what she’s done in the music industry.” Of course, being compared to Tina Turner is one of the biggest compliments one could ever receive, after all, she is the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll,”. Her career spanned over five decades, during which she released nine solo studio albums, with Private Dancer (1984) marking a major comeback, featuring the hit “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” which earned her three Grammy Awards.
Turner sold over 100 million records worldwide, achieved top 40 hits across seven consecutive decades in the UK, and won 12 Grammys, including honors in pop, rock, and R&B. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, first with Ike Turner in 1991 and later as a solo artist in 2021. In week 2, Chiles went from giving a 10/20 performance to setting the stage on fire with a 22/30 performance. What was the change? The jive!

She said, “I think honestly, week one was really just to show like, hey, this is me. We’re here, and you know, going forward, we knew that week two was going to be obviously bigger and better because the Jive is something that I really enjoyed. It wasn’t like Oh, this is going to be a hard thing. I’m an athlete. I’m always on my toes. So I was like Oh, this is perfect. This is what I’m going to do. And I just really enjoyed it.” For those of us who are unversed in dance, jive is one of the five International Latin dances. It is a lively, upbeat dance known for its quick, bouncy footwork.

Dancers use moves like triple steps and rock steps, lifting their knees high and swinging their hips with a relaxed, springy energy. On top of that, kicks, flicks, and twist turns give it a playful, theatrical vibe that’s fun to watch and even more fun to do. Given Jordan is a gymnast and how good she is on the floor, the Jive seemed almost effortless with Jordan flooring it.
In week two, she did the dance form on “Maniac” by Michael Sembello, a performance so good it drew praise from gymnastics GOAT and former DWTS star, Simone Biles herself. “My personality, yes, it came out more, which you guys will see more of for sure now that I know what the model was like and what the people and then I get to show,” she added.

How has the DWTS experience been for Jordan Chiles?
After her debut performance on Dancing with the Stars, the Olympian was asked how things are on the show and how they differ from her sport, gymnastics. “Honestly, the speed of it all. In gymnastics, I am used to a set routine where every move is locked in. On that dance floor, it felt like the music, the crowd, the cameras, all hit at once. The adrenaline was so strong. One second I was starting and the next it was over. I wanted to run it back,” On the surface level, one might think Chiles is doing what she does on the floor, but when you ponder upon it, things are vastly different.
In gymnastics, you can perform a set routine at different meets. Here, you will have to think of something new, unique, and better than everybody for every week you take on the stage. Upon being asked if she has any pre-show rituals, she said that it is the same as gymnastics: “deep breath, quick prayer, and remind myself I got this. I also stretched because I was not about to pull a muscle on national TV.” Week 1 performance that almost had them eliminated from the competition did not take a toll on Jordan Chiles‘ sense of humor. But did she want to change something about her performance? Yes.

“I would remind myself to relax. As a gymnast, I chase perfection. Dance is not about that. It is about telling a story. If I could change anything, I wouldn’t, because everything happens for a reason. We learn from every up and down,” she said. And this is what she did – she did not let week 1 affect her, and performed a dance that earned great praise from the judges. On the judges’ combined leaderboard, she is 8th with 32 points, just below Elaine Hendrix (7th with 33 points) and above Danielle Fishel (9th with 31 points). Robert Irwin is leading with 37 points.
