The 26-year-old rookie quarterback, Tyler Shough, lost the competition to quarterback Spencer Rattler in the preseason to secure the starting job. While the latter has shown potential, he hasn’t been able to lift the team. The Saints dropped to 0-3 after a 44-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. While rumors of the Saints securing the top pick in 2026 surface, coach Kellen Moore declared that he has no plans for changes in the roster as of now.

Kellen Moore said the Saints aren’t going to be looking at personnel changes at this point: “Our job is to get better right now,” Jeff Nowak reported on X. So, it’s likely that Rattler will hold on to his starting job. This comes after double-digit penalties and other issues that led to their loss in Week 3. On their first series, they turned the ball over on downs when Rattler overthrew running back Alvin Kamara on fourth-and-2 at the Seahawks’ 45-yard line. On the second series, they were flagged for a false start during an attempt at tush push.

But the coach is focused on improving the team. During the post-game interview, the coach explained that the team didn’t have a good start, which is true and frustrating, but there are still chances ahead, and that the players should focus on the future rather than dwelling on past losses. He had even made roster moves to help improve the Rattlers’ offense.

When asked about Rattler’s performance against the Seahawks, the coach explained, “I thought Spencer played fine. He gave us some opportunities. He did some good things. We just got in too many obvious pass situations where we weren’t able to get the explosive plays, and I got to find a way to put him and help him be in better positions.”

But for Rattler, he made a record in this game for all the wrong reasons. He racked up 28 of 39 for 218 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the game. That said, he’s started nine NFL games and hasn’t won any of them. “It’s not fun,” the QB said when asked about the embarrassing record. “But like the vets say, you can’t ride the roller coaster of emotions. We have to have a neutral thought. It’s a long season. You see what’s happening. We’ve just got to be better.” It wasn’t surprising that Rattler also shared the same sentiment as the coach.

Meanwhile, 25-year-old rookie Tyler Shough is waiting in the wings if Rattler’s poor form continues.

Kellen Moore can turn to Tyler Shough if Spencer Rattler’s form doesn’t improve

During his time at Louisville, Tyler Shough played a full 12-game schedule and threw 23 touchdowns against 6 interceptions, while averaging 266.3 passing yards per game and completing 62.7% of his passes. However, he is yet to make a similar impact for the Saints.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Spencer Rattler the right choice for the Saints, or should Tyler Shough get his chance?

Have an interesting take?

After losing the starting job, Shough saw his NFL action while stepping in for Rattler during the game against Seattle. During his brief time in the field, he failed to complete either of his pass attempts. So, while the team has no plans to switch their starting QB, the team might look for a change if Rattler continues to struggle.

Speaking of Shough, the coach shared that he wanted to give the rookie a couple of snaps. “Obviously, we weren’t going to win the football game. Try and get Tyler a few reps in the situation,” he said. So, Tyler might be able to see more opportunities later this season

Now, the team may also have hope for a new QB in the next season. As per Tankathon, the Saints have the #2 pick in the draft. Arch Manning, Garrett Nussmeier, and a few more are the only options for the team. However, Moore and the Saints will need a proven QB to avoid a bad start like this season in 2026
