On Feb 28, Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter’s wife, Leanna De La Fuente, sincerely saved a note in her phone. Titled “Dream 2/28,” it read, “Baby was a boy with lots and lots of curly hair.” It was as if each word, scripted like a blessing, was waiting its turn to become reality, these many months later. We don’t yet know the newborn’s name or the date of birth, but the couple has quietly welcomed a baby boy.

And as for keeping the rest of the world posted, they did so with a heartfelt YouTube video titled “Dear Son…” on Wednesday. Congratulations have been pouring in across social platforms, but one response stood out. Hunter’s mother, Ferrante Edmonds, has a lot to be thankful for this year. And naturally, she was tickled pink to welcome the bundle of joy. In her typical reserved fashion, Edmonds shared a subtle message on her IG story: “Until it’s done. Tell no one.” But it probably was the post’s caption that resonated with her better.

“Blocking your blessings is real… Some of your biggest haters are disguised as ‘friends.’ That little dopamine hit you get from bragging too soon isn’t worth watching your plans fall apart.” That message, posted right after a reshare of Travis Hunter’s announcement of the birth of their son, felt like an answer to quieten more online speculation and trolling the couple would have faced if their pregnancy had been announced earlier. And if recent memory serves us right, the couple, especially De La Fuente, had seen some of the most brutal online hate out there.

Theirs is a relationship that has been under a microscope long before the baby news arrived. From their engagement to public appearances, critics questioned Lenee’s loyalty and motives, often labeling her with harsh accusations online.  The most notable wave came after the December 2024 Heisman Trophy ceremony. When Hunter’s name was announced as the winner, cameras briefly showed Deion Sanders signaling Lenee to stand, a small delay that has continued to spark backlash even today. But only if that was the extent of it all.

Social media users have often accused her of being a “gold digger,” forcing Hunter to fire back, sarcastically agreeing, “I’m a gold digger too,” while defending her. The online attacks in the past have been so relentless that Hunter once deactivated his Instagram, later admitting the criticism deeply affected Lenee’s mental health. Amid all the relationship storms, Edmond has stood steadfast by her son, often sharing messages for him on her social media.

When Hunter was being celebrated for his Heisman win, but his (then) girlfriend was under fire for supposedly not being supportive enough, Edmonds posted a picture of the mother-son duo writing, “I Love You Baby @db3_tip on to the next level. I’m so proud of you.

This time, however, she chose an even quieter approach. Instead of addressing critics directly, Edmonds posted: “Everything that is said doesn’t need to be addressed.” She chose to protect everyone’s peace instead, reflecting the same philosophy behind her recent message: move in silence, results will speak, and protect what matters the most– the couple’s newborn.

“He was crying, he was perfect,” Leanna said, recalling the moment their son was born and the “wave of peace” that followed to make everything else fade away. The three-minute-long “Dear Son…” YouTube video features Hunter hoping that his son grows to be better than him, and ends with him declaring, “That baby look just like me!” as the delivery room filled with laughter
