Is there no end to the Miami Dolphins’ woes? During the game against the Buffalo Bills, in the second quarter, the team faced another shockwave, forcing the management to make rapid changes while their key cornerback was sidelined.

Dolphins cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. departed Thursday night’s game after a hamstring injury. A fifth-round draft pick out of the University of Florida, Marshall was spotted limping off the field in the second quarter before departing to the locker room. His availability is now in question, and that has raised concerns for Miami.

The injury occurred in a Dolphins defense already dealing with multiple injuries. Nickel corner Marshall was beaten on a key third-and-2 play when Bills wideout Tyrell Shavers hauled in a 17-yard catch against him. After the play, Marshall remained by the sideline, showing clear frustration, before heading to the medical tent. He was first listed as questionable but was officially ruled out at halftime.

Miami quickly replaced him with Ethan Bonner, who had his first snaps of the season, but losing Marshall disrupted defensive coverage duties and communication. But that wasn’t the only damage that Miami suffered.

Miami took another hit when cornerback Jack Jones departed on the ensuing play after colliding with Dalton Kincaid on a crossing route. The two blocked each other, and Jones was down momentarily. The Dolphins were already thin at key secondary contributors such as Storm Duck (ankle) and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (calf), with cornerback Cam Smith still on the non-football injury list. The secondary depth has been tested to the breaking point, and Miami has had to call upon personnel to fill gaps.

Miami’s injury crisis amid Jason Marshall’s loss

The double loss of Marshall and Jones in quick succession exposed Miami’s depleted defensive backfield, as the Bills gained 360 yards (as opposed to the Fins’ 276) to win the game 31-21, pushing Mike McDaniel’s men into a 0-3 hole. It seemed too easy for Josh Allen, who recorded his best completion rate of the season so far (78.6%) and three passing TDs. Not to mention RB James Cook, who had 19 carries for 108 yards and a score.

The Dolphins had been managing injuries ahead of Thursday night’s game, elevating kicker Riley Patterson and safety Jordan Colbert to the active roster to offset roster gaps.

What’s your perspective on:

With Jason Marshall Jr. injured, is Miami's defense too fragile to secure a win this season?

Have an interesting take?

With Marshall now out and Jones injured, the team faces a severe shortage of cornerbacks. In addition to the two players hurt during the game, cornerback JuJu Brents was also absent. He was picked up by the Dolphins on waivers following his release from the Colts. Meanwhile, fellow corners Kader Kohou (knee) and Artie Burns (knee) had already been placed on injured reserve back in training camp.

Mike McDaniel will have his hands full (or nearly empty) when the Fins go up against the Jets in Week 4.
