It’s been seven months since Andy Reid first said the words out loud: “He’d [Travis Kelce] sacrifice for the cause.” At the time, it felt symbolic – an aging star tightening his role to keep Kansas City’s machine humming. Last season, Travis Kelce’s stat line was louder than the headlines. Only three touchdowns and 823 yards on the year. For most tight ends, that’s solid. For Kelce? That’s a statistical dip – and his lowest yardage total since his rookie season in 2014. Reid stood by him then, calling him a captain, a selfless leader, someone who’d “help out everywhere” even when the targets weren’t coming. Fast forward to July 2025, and that mantra is still playing out…one buzz cut at a time.

The Chiefs’ star tight end, who showed up to training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, on July 22 with enough shag to headline a shampoo commercial – full-on shag draped over his eyebrows. Now looks more like his 2024 self – buzzed, clean-cut, and business-mode engaged. Fans noticed the change on July 27, when Travis Kelce rolled in wearing his red practice jersey and a white towel draped over his head. But underneath? Not a single bang left. The Missouri heat might’ve melted the flow straight off.

Social media quickly picked up the trail. “It does in fact appear Travis Kelce may have cut his hair! Who can blame him in this crazy heat!” one fan posted, capturing the mood across #ChiefsCamp2025. But this isn’t just about vanity. This is Kelce’s reset. The fresh cut and leaner frame aren’t random – they’re part of a bigger offseason sacrifice. A physical and symbolic shedding of last year’s frustration.

Kelce, now 35, came into camp looking sharp, spry, and clearly on a mission to flip the narrative. “He’s svelte right now,” Reid told reporters on July 25. “Looks like he’s 20.” Reid even hinted Kelce was in the top three when it comes to the team’s grueling conditioning run. “You saw him yesterday on the long run where he had the burst. He’s worked hard to get to this spot.”

The tight end himself admitted he’d focused on specific training goals this offseason. “Each year is different, man. You gotta rebuild it,” Kelce said. Rumors of a 25-pound weight loss circulated, but he laughed it off. “Don’t believe everything you read on the internet, guys.” Still, between the haircut, the conditioning, and the extra reps – these are the kind of sacrifices you make when you’re chasing one last big year. And judging by the look in Kelce’s eyes, he’s not planning to go out quietly. But while Kelce’s hair grabbed the cameras, head coach Andy Reid delivered the real news.

While Travis Kelce trims down, Chiefs’ depth takes a hit

The Chiefs’ rising rookie tight end Jake Briningstool didn’t suit up for Sunday’s practice on July 27. According to KSHB’s Matt Foster, the young TE was spotted heading to the field in a hat and compression sleeve – no pads, no cleats. Just vibes and injury rehab. It’s not Briningstool’s first setback either. He missed parts of OTAs and minicamp earlier this year with an undisclosed issue. This latest development might be a re-aggravation.

Even Pete Sweeney reported on X, “Andy Reid said Jake Briningstool didn’t practise with a hamstring strain. Reid added that Kristian Fulton is recovering from cleanup surgery (knee) in the spring. Omarr Norman-Lott tweaked his ankle but returned to practise.” That’s a rough blow considering Briningstool had emerged as a quiet star in early camp reps – already working with the first-team offense. And now, with the 2025 season opener in Brazil just weeks away, Kansas City might be back to leaning hard on its veteran TE. As in, Travis freshly buzzed Kelce.

What’s your perspective on:

With injuries piling up, can a buzzed Kelce carry the Chiefs' tight end load?

Have an interesting take?

With Briningstool sidelined, the tight end depth just got thinner – and Kelce, newly trimmed and all, might be gearing up to shoulder even more reps. So, yeah. Hair today, gone tomorrow. But in Chiefs camp, every strand (and snap) counts. For now, his name seems to be coming on the injury reserve list. And the man with the shortest hair in camp might have to carry the longest load.
