In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs had a prime chance to take the lead. On 2nd-and-goal from the Eagles’ 6-yard line, Patrick Mahomes threw to Travis Kelce, but the pass slipped away and went straight to Andrew Mukuba of the Eagles, who wasted no time completing the interception. While Kelce frustratingly admitted his mistake, Mahomes insisted it was his own error.
The interception proved costly for the Chiefs, and Mahomes was quick to take the blame. “Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes on the Kelce interception at the goal line: I threw it a tad too early, if I could put it on his body, he can catch it, take the hit, and get into the endzone,” Rob Collins reported. Mukuba took the ball past Kansas City’s 40-yard line and would have gone all the way had Josh Simmons not intervened. Kelce was visibly upset. The tight end threw his hands in the air and grabbed at his mouth guard straps in anger before heading to the sidelines, where he removed his helmet. And it was not the only time in the game that Kelce let out his frustration.

At the end of the second quarter, the veteran was not upset with himself, but at some of his teammates and the head coach, Andy Reid. “I’m sick of this sh–,” he said and slammed his helmet on the ground following a 13-yard touchdown scramble from Mahomes. Kelce’s frustration seemed to have stemmed from the lack of support for the QB. Two plays ago, Mahomes was sacked for a loss of ten yards. And while that loss was rendered null and void, thanks to two holding penalties, he was forced to scramble out of a designed pass to gain six yards on the very next play.
Earlier, in an interview, Kelce assured that he had put the Super Bowl loss behind him and was focused on the current season. However, his emotions were clearly visible on the field, as he paced the sideline after the costly interception. The tension from the team’s Super Bowl loss to the Eagles and the competitive fire to redeem in Week 2.
At this point, things aren’t looking good for the Chiefs, who had stumbled to an 0-2 start. This is a first for the Chiefs since 2014. Even so, the Chiefs’ QB has not lost faith. He remains confident that the team is close to getting back on track, as he said, “We played two good football teams and made mistakes in big moments, stuff that we’re not used to doing…It’s one guy here or there, it’s not like we’re missing by much. I know it sucks to hear for the fans, but I feel like we’re close. Obviously, we’ve never been 0-2 but we’ve dealt with challenges and we’ve lost games.”

Mahomes completed 16 of 29 passes for 187 yards, recording two total touchdowns along with one interception. But the issue was the offense’s struggles to find consistency through the air. While Mahomes shouldered the blame for what he described as his mistake, head coach Andy Reid also took responsibility.
Andy Reid called out the Chiefs’ offense
Fans were clearly upset over the Chiefs’ loss, with some even demanding that the franchise fire the coach and that Kelce should retire. After these few obvious mistakes, the coach took the responsibility, and while doing so, he also called out the offense for the underwhelming performance. As Charles Goldman reported, Reid said, “I thought defensively we played really solid football. . . On the offensive side, we can’t have the turnover…It’s my responsibility.” Coach Reid admitted that he was too aggressive in key moments while praising his players for their effort and teamwork. He added that the team will continue to focus on improving. And not just the offense, the coach also called out the issues with the refs.

There were quite a few mistakes on the offense in the second half. Early in the third quarter, they attempted a fourth-and-1, but Kareem Hunt was stopped for a loss. The Eagles took over with a 51-yard Jake Elliot field goal, which put the visitors ahead at 13-10.
The Eagles then went on to seal the deal with a 1-yard Jalen Hurts tush push touchdown. With the final score at 20-10, the Eagles became the first team to walk out of Arrowhead Stadium with a victory margin of ten points since the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023.
