Mike Gundy has been the face of Oklahoma State football since the George W. Bush era. Having mostly 10-win seasons kept things pretty much in his favor. But a 3-9 finish last year was enough to bring him on the hot seat. Now, comes in the worst part: the start of 2025. A 1-3 record through four weeks, with a humiliating 69-3 loss at Oregon, and an even more embarrassing loss to Tulsa. The same Golden Hurricane that hadn’t beaten OSU at home since 1951. Amid all the hot-seat talk, Mike Gundy knows exactly where he stands.

So when Gundy rolled into his presser before the Baylor game-week, you’d expect some nervous energy or maybe a coach dodging questions. But not this guy. Instead, he cracked a joke that felt like a roast of himself. “Is it hot in here or is it just me every week?” One thing people have always admired about Mike Gundy is his unpredictable nature. Everything that comes out of his mouth is straight gold.

Gundy doesn’t plan to back down at all. “100 percent,” he fired back when asked if he intends to remain at Oklahoma State beyond this season. The man doubled down, reminding everyone that his heart’s always been in Stillwater and he won’t leave until he says so, or the school says so. His contract runs through 2028, and according to ESPN, the buyout sits at a cool $15 million if OSU pulls the trigger too soon.

What makes this whole saga sting is the drop-off. From 2006 through 2023, Gundy had OSU bowl-eligible teams every year, flirting with the College Football Playoff during the four-team era. Now, the Cowboys have lost 11 straight games against FBS opponents.

Gundy insists he’s still got the fire in him: “When I was hired to take this job, ever since that day, I’ve put my heart and soul into this,” he said. “And I will continue to do that until when I say I don’t want to or when someone else says, ‘We don’t want you to do it.’” The Cowboys now face their Big 12 opener against Baylor, and it doesn’t look promising at all for Gundy’s boys.

Mike Gundy on Baylor Football and Sawyer Robertson

Each week, a new problem seems to arise for Mike Gundy and his squad. this week, the Cowboys are set to face the hottest QB in town. Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson is the nation’s leading passer through four weeks. Last season, Robertson torched OSU for 222 passing yards, 73 rushing yards, and four total touchdowns in Waco. The way he is balling right now, it’s safe to put money on him to repeat that beatdown again. Now he’s back, older, sharper, and licking his chops at a defense that’s forced just one interception and one fumble recovery all season. The oddsmakers aren’t buying OSU either. Dave Aranda’s Baylor opened as a 20.5 favorite.

Even Gundy tipped his cap, admitting Robertson “throws it around pretty good, he’s nifty,” he said. Baylor’s attack is aggressive, and Robertson isn’t afraid to test defenses with risky throws. The key? Those 50-50 balls. “We have to be able to take the ball away from the offense and give it back to our offense,” defensive back Cam Smith said. That sounds great on paper, but OSU hasn’t shown the teeth to make it happen all season. Doubt they will show it against the Bears.

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham was hired to revitalize the group, but through three games the Cowboys look more like a team chasing shadows. If OSU wants to get this dub, they need plenty of turnovers. Since Robertson’s thrown a pick in two straight games, there’s a small chance of that happening. But if they fail to capitalize, Saturday could get uglier and more hotter for Mike Gundy.
