With a semifinal spot on the line, reigning FIBA World Champions Germany face off against Slovenia, led by a generational talent in Luka Doncic, at the Xiaomi Arena in Riga, Latvia. It’s the final game of the EuroBasket 2025 quarterfinals and easily the most anticipated. Germany enters undefeated, untouchable so far with a 6-0 record, winning each game by an average of over 30 points.
Slovenia, meanwhile, has been leaning entirely on Luka magic. Doncic dropped 42 on Italy in the Round of 16, leads in scoring and steals at the competition, and has a knock to recover for in time. Early in the first quarter against Italy, Luka Doncic jammed his leg while colliding with Italian guard Alessandro Pajola and limped off the court. However, he later returned to court and considering the lack of any update ever since and the importance of the game at hand, Doncic is undoubtedly expected to suit up against Germany.

Is Luka Doncic Playing Today?
After some therapy on the sidelines, Doncic returned, and returned with fury. He poured in 42 points on 11-of-19 shooting, grabbed ten rebounds, and led Slovenia to a wire-to-wire 84–77 win. His comments after the game were blunt but optimistic: “Yes, it hurts,” Doncic said. “I have to get therapies now. But it will be fine.” His father, Sasa Doncic, echoed the sentiment, “Luka’s condition is fine. There are lots of hits and bruises, but that’s part of the game. It would be strange if he didn’t get hurt, considering there are games practically every other day.” So yes, Luka Doncic will be playing today.

However, Slovenia will be without 19-year-old guard Mark Padjen due to a knee sprain. Josh Nebo, Vlatko Cancar, Jaka Blazic, and Zoran Dragic are already out. However, if this new version of Doncic that we saw against Italy is any indicator, he’s locked in mentally.
“We’re up by seven, calm the f___down, everyone,” Luka told his teammates during a timeout. “You’re all nervous, it’s seven points. Focus, we don’t need to f*ing fight each other. We’re against them, not against ourselves, come on!”.
And so far? The Lakers star has kept Slovenia alive. Against Italy, he scored 30 in the first half alone. Germany knows the assignment. “You can’t stop him,” said Maodo Lo. “We’ll see how much we can limit him.” Johannes Thiemann added: “He’s incredibly talented. It will be difficult… but we all have to collectively defend, stop him, and play our best defense.”

Can Luka Doncic single-handedly topple the undefeated German squad, or is Slovenia outmatched?

Germany has depth, balance, and the hardware to prove it. They’re the defending World Champions for a reason, and their Round of 16 destruction of Portugal, fueled by a 33-7 fourth quarter, was a statement. Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner are operating in harmony. Isaac Bonga is a lockdown defender, and Daniel Theis holds his ground in the paint.
But this is a different kind of challenge. Doncic is averaging 34.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 3.2 steals per game across six appearances. His performances have been historic. Only Nikos Galis has scored more per game in a single EuroBasket. The real question is whether the role players around Doncic can rise. Klemen Prepelic scored 11 vs Italy, and Alen Omic provided timely offensive rebounds. They’ll need even more now.

Germany, meanwhile, continues to roll. Schroder with 20.2 PPG, Wagner recording 20.7 PPG, and a supporting cast of seven players averaging over 8.5 points make them the most complete team in the tournament. Though Slovenia is riding a four-game win streak, Germany hasn’t lost at all. The Germans average 102.3 PPG, Slovenia 92.2. This is the most high-powered offensive matchup of the tournament, and both squads know it.
If Germany gets hot from deep, which they haven’t done consistently the last two games, Slovenia could be overwhelmed. But Luka is Luka. His gravity alone warps defenses and gives Slovenia a puncher’s chance in any game, no matter how daunting. Expect Germany to trap and switch everything defensively, sending Bonga, Wagner, and Schroder at Luka in waves. The question is whether Slovenia’s shooters, Prepelic, Muric, and Hrovat, can hit open looks when they come.
