You bet, little leaguer; roasting the most popular and highest-paid baseball players was not in your cards! First, Juan Soto was roasted by a kid, and now the Chosen One is under fire, too. Turns out that Shohei Ohtani, the face of baseball today, the guy who manages to dominate the field and somehow keep the “humble” tag, is not so humble after all. At least if you ask one little leaguer, because for her it is nothing more than a facade!

Yes, you read that right. During the Little League Classic on Sunday at Bowman Field in Pittsburgh, Ohtani was not even playing—it was the Mets vs. the Mariners. But even then, his name managed to steal the spotlight thanks to a kid from Australia.

While Julio Rodriguez was batting in the fourth inning, ESPN’s broadcast cut to 12-year-old Monica Arcuri. And she shared a memory of hers from when she first saw Ohtani back in 2023—back then, he was with the Angels. At first, the story started off sweet; Ohtani hit a homer, and a fan ended up with the ball, and Monica’s brother got it as a souvenir. Cute. But then came the twist.

Monica mentioned that she met Ohtani the next day and asked for an autograph. But all she got from the $700 million Dodger star was a “side eye.” The next day, we went to the VIP box at the front, and I asked for his signature. But all he gave me was a side-eye and not a nice glance, so after that, I’ve never liked him ever since. He’s not really humble. Not my style.” Ouch. So not the Disney prince image that the Dodgers or even MLB wants to push, right?

What was supposed to be a nice filler moment turned into a low-key roast of baseball’s biggest star. But of course, Shohei Ohtani gets the benefit of the doubt, and you have to give it that athletes are human, too. Maybe that day he was rushing, or maybe he was locked in mentally and prepping for the game. And also, he might just be having a bad day. Still, when you are the most famous athlete in baseball, fan interaction matters—and kids can get sensitive. The timing is almost ironic, given that Ohtani announced that he will be releasing a children’s book called Decoy Saves Opening Day starring his dog Decoy next February. Of course, for Monica, nothing matters; for her, Ohtani is just the guy who wouldn’t sign her ball.

Before Ohtani got roasted, Soto took the heat!

Even before Ohtani and his humble image were attacked, Juan Soto took the heat. And the dagger came not from a big leaguer but from a 12-year-old Canadian kid who was not afraid to speak his mind. The kid in question is Canada’s Misha Lee.

During the Little League World Series, Lee was the name on everyone’s lips. Not because his team moved past Australia in a groundbreaking 12-0 win, but because he gave a brutally honest answer. When asked if Soto was his favorite, Lee, with a smirk, said, “Eh, he’s kind of overrated.” Ouch, there goes a $765 burn! Lee also mentioned that he would rather have an autograph from Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Shohei Ohtani's 'humble' image just a facade, or did Monica catch him on a bad day?

Have an interesting take?

The guy who is now beating Aaron Judge, yes, the Yankees captain, in the MVP race. For Soto, meanwhile, the timing of this burn couldn’t be worse. Sure, he has got 30 home runs for now, but fans expect more. And granted they would, Steve Cohen shelled out $765 million + the myriads of perks for him to create magic. That magic is what is missing, and sure, he has stars like Jose Reyes backing him up, but what Lee mentioned runs true for many fans. One thing is for sure, though: the little leaguers proved that they have the honest bone and can tell things that even adults cannot.
