All the gossips across the league around Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte have now changed the entire course of it. In Bob Nightengale’s Sunday column for the USA Today, he graded teams based on their trade deadline moves. But he touched on Marte in his “around the basepaths” section. He noted that the Diamondbacks “will listen to offers” on Marte in the offseason. Nightingale also noted that despite the talent, “he can be a diva.” However, now the narrative is facing a sharp turn.

All of these speculations stemmed from Marte’s actions following the All-Star break. During the All-Star Game night at Truist Park, his home had been burglarized and naturally he took some days off. Police confirmed a “high-dollar” residential burglary at Marte’s Scottsdale home during the All-Star break; multiple outlets reported that numerous personal items and jewelry were taken and the investigation remains active.

Few hours after Nightingale’s claims, Marte’s agent, Charisse Dash, chimed in to firmly deny the rumors. “None of that has happened; it’s all false.” As per her, there have been no such issues between Marte and his teammates nor is the club entertaining offers for him at this time.

Before Dash, Marte’s teammate Geraldo Perdomo also cleared the air before the Diamondbacks’ 5-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies. “I’m tired of this. It’s going to be for all reporters and all the writers. This is the second time something came out (about) Marte.” He’s referring to the same All-Star break chaos here.

Marte signed an extension with the Diamondbacks back in April for six years and $116.5 million. That extension, reported by MLB.com and ESPN, includes deferred payments and option language that gives the D-backs some short-term payroll flexibility; contract coverage noted both deferred money and an opt-out/option structure. Those structural details are relevant to any offseason trade calculus — deferred money can make a veteran more movable in trade talks. He’s currently slashing .298/.399/.558 with 23 homers and 56 RBIs.

Meanwhile, the D-Backs are barely two-thirds of the way through a nightmare season. They were once viewed as a serious contender in the NL West. On the contrary, now, with all the injury setbacks and poor pitching depth, they don’t look the same. At this point, they can’t afford to lose Marte to any other club.

Which club was suggested as best for Ketel Marte amidst the trade rumors?

FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently called out the Detroit Tigers as the perfect suitors for the three-time All-Star. “We have seen the Tigers slowly attempt to branch out and assert their presence in the AL landscape.” Kline noted.

He further noted that Alex Bregman was also almost a Tiger during the last off-season, at a price point much higher than Marte’s $15-22 million annually over the next five years. Moreover, the Tigers have an incredible farm system. Overall, according to Kline, the Tigers would make better sense for Marte than any other club.

During the last off-season, the Tigers proved they don’t fear going after the big names in free agency. Marte’s salary wouldn’t be an issue for them. Moreover, with the Tigers’ strong group of young prospects, it could form a dangerous roster for the All-Star second baseman.

Last offseason, the Tigers proved they’re not afraid to go after big names in free agency, so Marte’s salary wouldn’t really be a problem for them. On top of that, Detroit has a strong group of young prospects, which means they could put together a good trade offer for the All-Star second baseman without much trouble.
