On September 10, 2025, the nation mourned the loss of Charlie Kirk, who collapsed while delivering a speech at Utah Valley University. Tributes poured in from across the country, with many public figures expressing their condolences. Among them was Phil Mickelson, who has often voiced his opinions on American politics and culture. When reports surfaced that the President planned to posthumously honor Kirk with a medal, Mickelson once again shared his thoughts on the matter.

A couple of days ago, Eric Daugherty revealed “🚨 BREAKING: President Trump will award CHARLIE KIRK the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously on what would’ve been his 32nd birthday – Oct. 14, next week, per CNN. This is going to be historic. It’s well-deserved. 🇺🇸🙏,” confirming that the late Charlie Kirk’s family was set to receive the medal from President Donald Trump. And in response, Mickelson wrote, “His presence and message will live forever but I still wish he was here. This award is well deserved 👏👏.”

Phil Mickelson has continued to express his grief over Charlie Kirk’s passing. While the LIV Golf professional supported the decision to honor the late activist, he made it clear that he would have preferred to see Kirk alive to receive the recognition himself. Mickelson has maintained his public support for Kirk’s family and previously condemned online criticism directed at the conservative commentator. His reaction to the news of Kirk’s posthumous Presidential Medal, therefore, came as little surprise.

Watching the world split over Charlie Kirk’s death unsettled Phil Mickelson. In one of his tweets, he wrote, “The a********tion of Charlie Kirk is bringing out some of the best in humanity and it’s also exposing some of the worst.” He was surprised by how many people were actually making a mockery of the entire situation. Even Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show faced backlash for a poorly received segment on the incident.

In some of his other posts, Phil Mickelson shared some of Charlie Kirk’s debates over the years. He also tweeted, “The number of people supporting Tyler Robinson’s appalling behavior has opened my eyes to a side of extremism with a moral superiority complex that has also shaken my belief in people in general. I hope they are held accountable for their disgusting rhetoric.” 

For context, Tyler Robinson has been accused of k***ing Kirk. Mickelson shared many more posts that demonstrated his strong support for Kirk and his sadness over his passing. This further explains his latest tweet wishing Charlie Kirk were still alive.
