Keegan Bradley, the youngest Ryder Cup captain since Arnold Palmer, fumbles key names in his speech, sparking doubts. Was he really wrong? Speaking at the opening ceremony, Bradley, being a proud captain he is, went ahead and introduced his 12-member squad with their city of origins.
“And now, it’s my honor to introduce to you the 2025 United States Ryder Cup team. From Louisiana, Sam Burns; from California, Patrick Cantlay; from Texas, Bryson DeChambeau; from Georgia, Harris English; from Georgia, Russell Henley; from North Carolina, Ben Griffin; from California, Collin Morikawa; from California, Xander Schauffele; from California, J.J. Spaun; from Kentucky, Justin Thomas; from New Jersey, Scottie Scheffler; from New York, your very own Cameron Young.”
Wait, did he just say Scottie Scheffler from New Jersey? Yes, he did! Now this might come across as a blow to many Scheffler fans who have been following the world number 1 for years. Scheffler has built quite an identity around being a Dallas boy, so how could Bradley mix this up?

Earlier in the ceremony, Bradley had made a far clearer mistake. When he was retelling how he fell in love with the Ryder Cup, he mixed up Justin Leonard with Justin Rose. “The Ryder Cup became personal for me in 1999 at Brookline. I was 13 years old, perched on my dad’s shoulders, watching Justin Rose’ miracle putt drop on 17. When the crowd erupted on 18, my dad let me join in on the celebration. That was the moment golf stopped being a game and started being a calling. That day changed my life.”
Now, anyone with a basic grasp of Ryder Cup history would know that it was not Rose, but Leonard. Rose, who will be playing his seventh Ryder Cup this week, was sitting just feet away when Bradley made this mistake. The mix-up made him and the entire European Team chuckle.
The reactions after this Scottie Scheffler “blunder” were loud, with several comments on X quick to take a jibe at dear Captain America: “I’m sure Scottie’s surprised to find out he’s from New Jersey! Dearie me.” Or, “…Got Scottie’s home completely wrong when announcing him!! He said New Jersey 😂😂😂.”
But what if I tell you, Bradley was not wrong. What if the fans got it wrong?
Scottie Scheffler’s city of origin
Here’s the truth. Scottie Scheffler is from New Jersey. Yes, he often talks about his Dallas roots and his love for the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL, but that does not change the reality. Scheffler is a New Jerseyan by blood.
Scottie Scheffler was born on June 21, 1996, in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and grew up in Montvale. His dad often took him to practice at Bergen Community College Golf Course, even holding a flashlight so young Scottie could hit balls in the dark.
Just do t trust him to make a speech ! Justin Rose , what a putt in 1999. And I’m sure Scottie’s surprised to find out he’s from New Jersey ! Dearie me

In fact, just a week ago, Scheffler himself talked about his early memories from being in New Jersey and the surrounding areas. As Bethpage Black is in New York, and NJ is just a hand away, for Scheffler, it comes as an added advantage. I’m pretty familiar with the accents and the personalities. “I feel like New York and New Jersey are fairly similar in that sense. My dad grew up right across the street from the George Washington Bridge, and he wasn’t far from the city. I’m looking forward to going back there.”
The Schefflers moved to Dallas when Scottie was six after 9/11, when his mom took a job as COO at a law firm. While he grew up and built his career in Texas, his birthplace still matters. As his father said, “He’s born in New Jersey and raised in Texas, and he’s got a little bit of both in him. And that’s a good thing.”
Fans assumed Bradley erred because, despite being from New Jersey, Scheffler has always proudly shown his love for Dallas.

Scottie Scheffler — always a Dallas boy
One can’t deny Scottie Scheffler’s deep-rooted connection to Dallas. Once in the city, his parents took a loan of $50,000 so that Scottie could join the Royal Oaks Country Club. It is there that he learned alongside elite pros like Ryan Palmer, Colt Knost, and Harrison Frazar, just at the age of nine.
For a kid who was left behind his extended family and childhood roots, Dallas soon became his home. As Scheffler once put it, “Dallas is home for us.” And why won’t it be? Dallas acted as a launchpad for him, as he dominated the Northern Texas PGA junior circuit, winning 90 of 136 tournaments.
In fact, the Texas identity runs so deep that it spills beyond golf for him. Scottie Scheffler is a diehard fan of the city’s sports teams, especially the Rangers and Cowboys. It is really a universally known fact now. He even once joked on the Pardon My Take podcast that he’d “trade one Major Championship” for a Cowboys Super Bowl win!

So these are the very reasons that fans could not separate Scottie Scheffler from Dallas. And even though Keegan Bradley was right in his take, his speech quickly gained attention as yet another gaffe.
But to Bradley’s defence, it is his first time being a captain. The last time he was on the team, the US lost. And that happened painfully on the home turf, which later came to be known as the ‘Miracle of Medinah.’ So, it is obvious he would not be looking for history to repeat itself. All in all, it just adds to the drama that is anticipated in the coming days.
